Working alongside Freebridge Community Housing and those living and working in the large, 319-home estate in Kings Lynn, HemingwayDesign led a team including Mae Architects on the £30 million regeneration of Hillington Square.
Since work began in 2010, 302 flats have been upgraded with new kitchens and bathrooms, and a further 17 demolished to make way for a complete remodel of the external layout. This included the re-introduction of streets and removal of privacy-invading passageways and surplus garages, integrating Hillington Square with the rest of King’s Lynn and giving the site a more open, welcoming atmosphere. Communal gardens, an equipped play area and raised beds for vegetable plots have formed part of the landscaping re-design.
